Parameters Instruction of A Monitor

Monitor is the main medium between us and computer. Though the market of PC is shrinking these days, the role of display still can’t be replaced in the areas of home use, entertainment, and office.

There are so many manufactures in the market and every one of them has various new technologies and features. In this article, we will talk about the classified and parameters, so that we can make a good deal in it.

About 10 years ago, the displayers are almost all CRT, but now the products now are all LCD. The LED display we always talk about is meaning LED backlight and also in the category of LCD. As the CRT displays have been phased out, there is no need to know much about this part.

While we compare two monitors, we need to concern about these parts: panel, weight, screen size, ratio, resolution, interface, response time, refresh rate, contrast & brightness, light leakage, and 3D. The previous 4 are the most important parts and you should keep an eye on them.

The cost of a panel occupy the 1/2-2/3 entire cost of a display. The main stream displays can be divided into TN, VA, IPS, and PLS. The differences mostly exist in the viewing angle and color. TN is widely used in the entry level displays with the smallest viewing angle and poorest color. However, the small and poor is compared with the advanced ones. In fact, it also can meet of the needs of most people. Meanwhile, the VA panel has wider viewing angle and 16.7 million colors. It is a high-end product. As the main sale point of the manufactures, the IPS has the widest price gap. PLS is a new kind of material and has very few products. In general, for basic need, NA and IPS will be enough. For high-end monitor for professional need like image production, I’d recommend the IPS or VA.

The quality of panel is always expressed with the level, or we can say the dead pixels. It is a common condition several years ago but not anymore. Choose the new product will help you avoid this condition. In the screen size part, the 22, 23, 24, and 27 inch are the most popular ones. The screen 27 one is about 1.5 times of the 22 inch. Resolution reference: To 22-24 ones, 16:9 is 1920×1080, 16:10 is 1920×1200; 20-22 ones, 16:9 is 1600×900 and 16:10 is 1680×1050. There are some exceptions. For example, the monitors for DSLR are mostly from 7-10 inch yet with high resolution.
